Hearing Loss And Hearing Tests

Hearing is necessary for the development of speaking. The hearing process starting with heart beat of mother in the mother’s womb continues with hearing other sounds in nature and life and speaking is taught by repeating what is heard. 3 of 100 babies born in Turkey are born with hearing loss. Hearing loss for which action is not taken may result in delay of speaking and social and emotional problems.

If hearing loss is not determined, mild hearing loss or hearing loss in one ear may cause very serious results. According to researches, children with hearing loss in one ear show academic failure 10 times more than their peers hearing normally. It is determined that if hearing loss is found in early period, speaking, language and comprehension skills and personal and social skills of children develop better with rehabilitation and early intervention.

By means of “Otoacoustic emission and ABR tests” used in hearing screening, very mild, mild and medium hearing losses that families may have difficulty in noticing can be determined. When children with mild hearing loss not having screening tests are in the age of speaking and can’t reach the level of speaking of their peers, their families note the situation. It may result in 3-4 even sometimes 7-8 years of loss in language and speaking development of the child.

The first 6 months for learning by hearing is a critical period. Evaluation of hearing loss of infants in the first 3 months is very significant. No matter what the degree of hearing loss within the first 6 months is evaluations and examinations necessary for enabling the child to speak similar to his peers, establishing diagnosis and starting to use hearing aid and speaking education should be performed. Hearing loss can be easily understood with hearing tests regardless of the age group.

Hearing loss may arise from ear way or liquid accumulation in the ear. Hearing loss in a child with such temporary hearing loss can be improved by a minor surgery or medication.

Contrary to temporary hearing loss, some children have permanent hearing loss. Majority of these children may hear a little. Deafness is in question for few children. Early diagnosis, early using of hearing aid and early starting special education programs are very significant for the process of hearing of the child.
