Why is the kidney health significant?

Kidneys are the significant parts of circulation reaching to every corner of the body and comprising of heart and blood vessels. Approximately 1200 ml blood per minute pass through kidneys. Kidneys receive 20% of blood pumped by the heart. Kidneys filter about 150-180 liters of liquid a day and 1.5 liter of it is excreted as urine. 

Our kidneys undertake many duties such as regulation of hormonal, fluid-electrolyte balance and blood pressure as well as the duty of urinary system for this reason, preservation of kidneys is not significant not only for preventing urea or kidney diseases but also preventing many diseases such as cardiovascular disease. 

What should we observe to protect the kidneys?

• You should consume sufficient fluid and quantity of fluid should be increased on hot and dry days. 
 • Renal and urinary tract infections should be treated in time.
 • You should avoid medicine and chemical agents having adverse effects on kidneys.
 • Diabetes mellitus and hypertension patients should be treated and followed-up regularly. 
 • Urine should not be held in urinary bladder and you should urinate frequently. 
 • Persons having kidney disease history should refer to the physician.
 • You should avoid passive life style, obesity and over nutrition.

What is the sign and symptom of kidney diseases?

Most of kidney diseases progress without pain and insidiously contrary to the known fact. Many patients may not have any complaints. Diagnosis of kidney disease is established when the patient visits the doctor coincidentally or for another reason most of the time since there is no clear symptom. Kidney disease patients may consult the doctors for various signs and complaints. The primary ones include body swelling, high blood pressure, decrease or increase of urine quantity, frequent urination at nights, frequent urination, painful urination, blood in urine and color change, lumbar, side and inguinal pain.  

What is toxic nephropathy?

A number of medicines and harmful chemical agents used for treatment or diagnosis are excreted from the body via kidneys. For this reason, kidney diseases due to this medicine and harmful chemical agents are quite widespread. The concept of nephrotoxicity means the harmful effects of chemical agents and medicines in the kidney.

Medicine and chemical agents showing this effect are called as “nephrotoxic”. Toxic nephropathy may result in different clinical tables in patients and the most significant of it is acute (sudden) renal failure.

Does smoking affect renal functions adversely?

It is known that smoking is very harmful for human health. In addition to carcinogenic effects of smoking, it has harmful effects on heart, vascular and respiratory system. Smoking has an effect making kidney, kidney pelvis, ureter and urinary bladder cancer easy. 

What is the relation of hypertension and kidney?

Since hypertension (high blood pressure) is a disease affecting veins, it chooses kidneys like heart and brain as a target organ. If blood pressure is not controlled, hypertension will accelerate the progress of kidney disease. The most frequent symptom of some kidney diseases (Especially nephrites) is sometimes hypertension. Hypertension can be seen again in case that kidneys are damaged by stone and inflammation. As a conclusion, kidneys can be the cause and also victim of hypertension. 

Is there any relation between daily salt consumption and kidney health?

Daily average salt consumption is 18 grams in our country. This quantity is about 9 grams in some societies. In renal failure, excretion of salt by food is damaged and salt accumulates in the body. Excessive salt intake increases blood pressure and results in cardiac failure. It is known that limitation of daily salt consumption protects kidney health by blood pressure control. By reducing salt consumption, frequency of hypertension and renal failure will decrease.
