They are the inflammatory diseases affecting gingiva and other tissues supporting teeth. 70% of tooth loss in adults occurs due to gingival diseases. It can be treated successfully with early diagnosis. Prevention or treatment of gingival diseases is significant for protecting natural teeth, easier chewing and better digestion.
The symptoms of gingival diseases include bleeding gingiva, swelling and sensitive gingiva, gingiva breaking from teeth easily and gleet, dangling tooth, teeth becoming distant, shift of relation between lower and upper teeth while biting, change of sectional prosthesis adaptation, deterioration and permanent malodor. On the other hand, gingival diseases may not have any symptoms and may progress. For this reason, regular dental control is recommended.
Prevention Of Tooth Decay
Bacteria plaque of bacteria in the mouth can create acid by residuals of food in the mouth. These acids dissolve mineral tissue and lead to deterioration of enamel and tooth decay.
What should we do to prevent tooth decay?
• Teeth should be brushed with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day.
• Teeth should be brushed before going to bed at night and once more at any convenient time during the day.
• The toothbrush should be with a small head, mildly hard, with the brush bristles rounded and the handle comfortably held. Also battery-powered/electrical toothbrushes that make oscillation/rotation movement may be recommended.
• After tooth brushing, the paste should be spitted out, however the mouth should not be rinsed with water if possible.
• In addition to the toothbrush, dental floss or another interface cleaning method that your dentist will suggest should be used.
• Smoking is extremely harmful for dental health, do not smoke.
• The quantity and frequency of sugar containing food and drinks intake should be reduced and if possible, they should only be taken in meals. Sugar containing goods should not be consumed more than 4 times a day.
• Nutrition should be healthy and well-balanced.
• Dentist control is necessary twice a year.
• Superficial fluoride varnish application by your dentist twice a year would reduce tooth decay to a large extent.
• Gargling with a fluoride mouthwash may be suggested once a day following tooth brushing.
